Frequently Asked Questions
What’s the purpose of outdoor signs?
The purpose of outdoor signs is to increase visibility, communicate information and strengthen brand awareness. They help businesses attract attention, guide visitors and create a professional first impression.
Key purposes of outdoor signage include:
- Promoting your brand – Displaying your company name, logo and identity to increase recognition.
- Attracting customers – Helping your business stand out and draw in passing footfall and traffic.
- Identifying your premises – Making it easy for customers, visitors and deliveries to find your location.
- Providing directions – Guiding people around a site with wayfinding and directional signage.
- Communicating important information – Displaying notices, opening hours, parking information, health and safety messages, and site rules.
- Advertising products and services – Promoting offers, events, products or key business messages.
- Creating a professional image – High-quality signage enhances credibility and reinforces trust in your brand.
In short, outdoor signs help businesses get noticed, communicate effectively and create a strong, lasting impression.
What are the different types of exterior signs?
Outdoor signs come in many forms, each designed for different purposes such as branding, direction, information and promotion.
The main types of exterior signs include:
- Fascia signs – The main signage fitted above shopfronts or building entrances to display your brand clearly.
- Illuminated fascia signs – Fascia signage with integrated lighting for maximum visibility day and night.
- Letter signs – Built-up or flat-cut lettering and logos that create a premium, dimensional branding effect.
- Totems & monoliths – Freestanding signs used for site branding, entrances and business parks.
- Post signs – Simple, durable signs mounted on posts, often used for entrances or information points.
- Directional signs – Wayfinding signage that helps guide visitors around a site or building.
- Projecting signs – Signs fixed perpendicular to a building to increase visibility from passing foot traffic.
- Outdoor plaques – Professional signs for company branding, notices, parking information and wayfinding.
- Window graphics – Vinyl graphics applied to glass for branding, advertising and privacy.
- Promotional signage – Temporary solutions such as banners, flags and pavement signs for marketing campaigns and events.
- Hoarding signs – Large panels used on construction sites to display branding, advertising and safety information.
These signage types can often be combined to create a complete outdoor branding system that improves visibility, communication and customer engagement.
Can outdoor signs be customised to my brand?
Yes – outdoor signs can be fully customised to your brand.
Nearly every element can be tailored, including your logo, typography, brand colours, materials, finishes and lighting. This ensures your signage aligns perfectly with your visual identity and creates a consistent, professional look across all touchpoints.
You can also customise the style and format of the sign itself, from 3D lettering and illuminated fascias to totems, plaques and window graphics. Even installation methods, size and positioning can be designed around your building and location for maximum impact.
The result is signage that doesn’t just display your name, but actively reinforces your brand and helps your business stand out.
Do I need planning permission for outdoor signs?
You may need advertisement consent (planning permission) for outdoor signs, depending on their size, lighting and placement.
Planning permission for outdoor signs
You may need to apply for advertisement consent to display an advertisement larger than 0.3 square metres, or any sign that is illuminated, on the front of or outside your property (whether residential or commercial).
Temporary notices up to 0.6 square metres, such as those for local events (e.g. street parties or concerts), may also be displayed for a limited period without consent. There are also separate rules for estate agent boards, which are generally limited to 0.5 square metres.
Important conditions for all outdoor signs
Even where consent is not required, all outdoor advertisements must comply with five standard conditions. They must:
- Be kept clean and in good condition
- Be maintained in a safe condition
- Have permission from the site owner (including the Highway Authority if on highway land)
- Not obscure or interfere with official road, rail, waterway or aviation signage
- Be removed carefully when required by the local planning authority
Planning permission for large outdoor signs for business
The planning system for larger business signage can be complex, and rules vary depending on location and sign type.Â
Best advice:
It’s always recommended to check with your local planning authority before installing signage.
For full guidance, refer to the government publication Outdoor advertisements and signs: a guide for advertisers.
