Signature Aviation Built Up Lettering Installation

The brief: taking on a complex signage project

Signature Aviation required the installation of what is understood to be the UK’s largest airport sign, featuring large-scale illuminated built up lettering within an operational aircraft hangar at London Luton airport.

Following two unsuccessful installation attempts by other sign companies, Sign Logic was brought in as a trusted contractor to get the project over the line, drawing on our experience with complex signage installations, challenging site conditions and stringent health and safety requirements.

The lettering had been purchased by Signature Aviation’s US team from a European supplier and shipped to the UK for installation. However, with limited technical documentation available and no suitable installation drawings, layouts or specifications to work from, our team needed to establish the technical requirements and develop a practical solution to install the signage safely and accurately.

Each letter measured approximately 3.5 metres high, with the overall installation spanning around 88 metres. Combined with the challenge of working within a live aircraft hangar, the scale of the project required detailed assessment, careful logistical planning and a coordinated approach to every stage of the installation.

The solution: technical expertise and detailed planning

We took ownership of the project from the initial assessment through to completion, developing the technical approach, coordinating the necessary resources and planning the installation around the operational requirements of the hangar.

Working out the technical details

Without suitable drawings or specifications to work from, we had to establish the dimensions, layout and practical installation requirements ourselves. This involved assessing the signage, working through how the illuminated letters would be positioned and installed, and determining the equipment and access arrangements needed to complete the work.

Planning around a live aviation environment

Working within an operational hangar meant the installation had to accommodate aircraft movements and changing schedules. We coordinated access, permits and installation logistics, making provisions for aircraft entering the hangar and ensuring the work could be carried out around aircraft stands and other operational constraints.

Managing access, installation and safety

The size and position of the lettering required careful planning of access equipment and installation methods. We coordinated the installation team, arranged the necessary equipment and prepared for the specific challenges of working at height within a live aviation environment.

Our experience with large-scale signage projects and demanding site conditions was central to managing these requirements and delivering a controlled, well-planned installation.

Delivered from start to finish in around two months

From the initial assessment and technical preparation through to logistics, coordination and installation, the project was completed in approximately two months.

Taking on a project with limited documentation and a challenging installation environment required more than simply putting signage in place. It called for practical problem-solving, technical knowledge and the ability to coordinate multiple elements while adapting to the demands of a live operational site.

By bringing these elements together, Sign Logic provided the specialist support needed to move the project forward and complete the installation.

A successful installation that led to further work

Building on the success of the initial project, Sign Logic was subsequently commissioned to supply and install two additional flex face signs for Signature Aviation. This further work reflected the confidence established through our successful delivery of the original installation and extended our involvement with the client beyond the initial brief.
