From making your warehouse easy to identify from the outside to improving navigation and safety inside, the right signage helps your site run smoothly and look professional.

In this guide, we explore five essential types of warehouse signage, including building signs, wayfinding, industrial estate directories and wall graphics, to help you make the most of your space.

1. Large scale building sign

Firstly, let’s talk about your main fascia signage. Try to make your sign as large as your budget can stretch – particularly if you’re near a high traffic area.

Signs that are too small are often swallowed up by the sheer scale of the building, and not impactful at all. Lighting should also be a key consideration, especially if you operate after dark.

The most popular types of building signs for warehousing are:

  • Flex face signs – lightweight and flexible, flex face signs are an affordable signage system that’s designed for large scale graphics without any joins or creases. The digitally printed PVC skins can be replaced with minimal downtime, making them ideal for property managers.
  • Lettering and logos – built up lettering is one of the most impactful types of building signs, but it’s also a higher cost than some of the other options. If 3D lettering is out of budget, flat cut lettering can create the illusion of being 3D when mounted away from a sign tray or wall.
  • Warehouse sign boards – a simple and reliable aluminium sign tray is often one of the most affordable options. Made from aluminium composite, these durable trays can be customised to your branding.

2. Directional signs

One of the most important but often overlooked type of sign you’ll need for your warehouse or industrial estate. A well thought out directional signage system will help your drivers and visitors find you and navigate around your premises with zero fuss.

There are lots of different options available for wayfinding, including:

  • Totems – totem signs are professional, highly impactful and make a great first impression. Ideal for your main welcome sign.
  • Post and panel signs – post mounted signs are a more cost-effective option and can be installed around your premises with your choice of graphics.
  • Interior wayfinding signs – indoor wayfinding systems come in a range of materials to suit your brand, including metals such as aluminum composite, brass and chrome, vinyl or Perspex. They can be mounted to the wall or free-standing.
  • Directional wall graphics – simple vinyl wall lettering and graphics can applied to help guide people around your building.

Smaller sites may only need one or two perfectly placed directional signs, while larger and more complex sites will need to consider more.

3. Industrial estate sign

There are so many options available for industrial park entrance signs, depending on the overall aesthetic you want to achieve and your budget.

A free-standing monolith sign (also known as a totem sign) is modern, professional and highly impactful. These can also be internally illuminated to create a soft glow, or externally lit with well-placed up-lighting.

Another popular option is the post and panel sign. These can be in virtually any shape and size, and are a more cost-effective option. This style of sign can be externally lit with up-lighting only.

Industrial estate signage is usually placed by the main road near the entrance, and can be used to elevate the estate’s brand and attract other large businesses into the industrial park, or as a directory system listing all the businesses currently located on the estate.

4. Custom wall graphics

Our surroundings have a huge impact on our wellbeing and productivity levels. And while it may not be possible or within budget to cover all the walls in your warehouse with mood-boosting wall graphics, you could look to invest in creating a number of breakout areas to help re-energise and motivate your team.

Whether it’s some custom graphics that reinforce your brand values and workplace culture, or a calming nature scene to help bring the outside in, the options are endless.

Custom wall graphics can completely transform any space in your building, such as the reception area, meeting rooms and canteen.

5. Warehouse safety signs

Safety warehouse signs are required to help keep your employees and visitors safe from any potential risk, while ensuring you comply with the latest health and safety regulations. As a manufacturer, warehouse or distribution centre, you will likely need to consider the following types of mandatory warehouse safety signs:

  • Machine signs
  • Forklift warning signs
  • Fire action and exit signs
  • First aid kit signs
  • Pedestrian signs
  • Warehouse floor signs and markers
  • Protective clothing signs
  • Chemical warning signs
  • Scaffolding signs
